Baroque is a style of art, architecture, and music that emerged in Europe in the late 16th century and continued into the early 18th century. Characterised by its dramatic, elaborate, and highly detailed approach, the Baroque style aimed to evoke emotion and grandeur.

In art, Baroque often features intense light and shadow contrasts (chiaroscuro), dynamic compositions, and a sense of movement. Artists such as Caravaggio and Peter Paul Rubens are notable figures in Baroque painting.

Baroque architecture is known for its grand scale, opulent decorations, and complex designs. Famous examples include St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Palace of Versailles in France. Architects such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini were influential in this period.

Baroque music is characterised by its ornate melodies, contrast in volume and pace, and the use of basso continuo (continuous bass line). Composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, and Antonio Vivaldi are iconic figures in Baroque music.

Overall, the Baroque style sought to impress, inspire, and convey the grandeur of the church, monarchy, or aristocracy that commissioned the works.

what is baroque?

This glorious homage to Baroque style can be found in the heart of North Adelaide, South Australia. Baroque Hall was constructed in 2022 and follows historically accurate late baroque, circa 1720, designs, often referred to as "rococo". It regularly hosts classical music recitals, very fitting given the inspiration behind its surprisingly recent build.

where is this stunning venue?

A wedding can tap into Baroque themes and styling by incorporating elements that reflect the opulence, drama, and grandeur characteristic of the Baroque period. Three words that encompass Baroque for me are ornate, gold, extravagant.

Look at venues with architectural elements that evoke Baroque grandeur, such as a historic mansion, a palace, or a hall with elaborate decor and high ceilings. Use rich, luxurious materials and colours such as gold, deep red, royal blue, and emerald green within your decor. Incorporate heavy drapes, ornate chandeliers, gilded mirrors, and detailed mouldings. Floral arrangements should be extravagant, featuring roses, peonies, and other lush blooms. Use ornate fonts, gold embossing, and intricate designs on the wedding invitations to set the tone for the Baroque theme. Consider using heavy, textured paper and elegant envelopes with wax seals.

Lean into the lavishness by hiring a classical musician or string quartet and consider a backdrop for posed photographs to emulate old world formal grandeur of the era.
